CBSE collaborates with IIMs, IITs to upskill School Principals

Ludhiana: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is taking several measures to address issues concerning the quality of education in its affiliated schools. In the light of this, the board is now collaborating with institutes such as Indian Institute of Management, Indian Institute of Technology, and other similar institutes to organize professional development programmes and short-term courses for its principals and vice-principals. The board already holds training programmes for teachers through its regional training centres in various subjects and other core skills related to school education.

The IIMs have now been requested to train CBSE school principals, vice-principals, and other school leaders in areas like strategic management and decision making, defining and managing the cultural DNA of the school, the element of visionary leadership, introducing and managing changes at an institutional level, counselling and managing external stakeholders, and building an organisational culture. The IIMs that are part of this new initiative, and will be training teachers are IIM Amritsar, IIM Indore, IIM Jammu, IIM Bodh Gaya, and IIM Vishakhapatnam.

The CBSE circular states, “School principals, being the administrative and academic heads of schools, have a challenging leadership role and need continuous training and platform for exchange of ideas and practices. The board organizes leadership training programmes for principals, which focus on multiple roles and responsibilities, provide space to examine issues that most principals face today, and facilitate evolving a tactical response for the better future adaptability of schools. Some of the learning outcomes of such trainings enable principals.”

The board has also requested the institutes to charge only a reasonable fee for such short-term programmes to facilitate the participation of not only the well-resourced school, but also the ones situated in remote areas and most educationally backward regions in the country. It has also requested other premier institutes like the IITs to explore the possibility of designing and offering some short-term courses for principals and teachers of private independent schools affiliated to CBSE.

Principal of BCM School, Shatri Nagar, cum CBSE city coordinator Paramjit Kaur, said, “I have done a week- long programme in 2002 from IIM Ahmedabad. However, now they have included other institutes. I would recommend new principals of city schools to take up such opportunities and get such trainings.”

Air Force School Halwara principal Shyamli Waraich said, “We have received the CBSE circular and will enrol for the programme soon after approval from the management, but I am keen to attend such training sessions, as it is going to be beneficial in the long run to change pedagogical planning and administrative structures.”
