Gujarat to have India’s first National Rail and Transport University ( NRTU ), will start work from the historic Pratap Vilas Palace

Vadodara : Indian will get its first Railway University as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the National Rail and Transport University (NRTU) in Vadodara on the Teachers’ day. Initially, the premier institution will work from the historic Pratap Vilas Palace, which houses the National Academy of Indian Railways and will later shift to a new 100-acre campus.

The institute will provide human resources training and build the capability of Indian Railways. In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that a railway university was needed for the research and modernisation of the country’s archaic railway system in particular, and transport infrastructure in general.

University would start the first academic year from The majestic Pratap Vilas palace, constructed between 1908-1914 , was designed based on a renaissance design by British architect Charles F Stevens, son of FW Stevens, who designed Mumbai’s Victoria Terminus. The palace was named after the 13th Maharaja of Baroda, Pratapsinh Rao Gaekwad. The premises were taken over on lease in 1949 by the Bombay province, who later gave it to Indian Railways.

University plans to use latest pedagogy and technology applications to give education on latest technology applications like- Radio frequency Identification, Artificial Intelligence and satellite-based tracking. It will initially offer two courses – BBA Transportation Management and BSc Transportation Technology.

The government feels the University will foster entrepreneurship and generate large scale employment opportunities. The University is expected to have 3,000 full-time students in future. So far, 103 students have been shortlisted for the undergraduate course at the university.
